Considerada como una de las fotógrafas de mayor relieve y transcendencia creativa en España, fue en el ambito universitario cuando se inició en el campo de la fotografía. Sin abandonar nunca el aula, se dedicará desde entonces a investigar con su cámara las celebraciones populares, paganas y religiosas, de la Europa mediterránea, especialmente España. Fruto de ello sería su libro España oculta (Lunwerg, 1989), el cual ha recibido numerosos premios como “Premio al libro del año” en el Festival de Fotografía de Arlés o el otorgado por la Fundación Eugene Smith de Nueva York.
Premio Nacional de Fotografía en 1996 y miembro de la agencia Magnum Photos desde 2005, Cristina García Rodero se encuentra inmersa desde hace años en su más personal proyecto titulado Entre el cielo y la tierra, un ingente registro de festivales de música, erotismo y sexo, sitios para diverstirse, mostrarse o amarse, de contacto humano o transcendente, y de lo que buena prueba de ello son Rituales en Haití -publicado ya en Ediciones tf, 2001- o Burning Man -trabajo sobre el festival que cada septiembre tiene lugar en el desierto de Nevada-.
Premio Nacional de Fotografía en 1996 y miembro de la agencia Magnum Photos desde 2005, Cristina García Rodero se encuentra inmersa desde hace años en su más personal proyecto titulado Entre el cielo y la tierra, un ingente registro de festivales de música, erotismo y sexo, sitios para diverstirse, mostrarse o amarse, de contacto humano o transcendente, y de lo que buena prueba de ello son Rituales en Haití -publicado ya en Ediciones tf, 2001- o Burning Man -trabajo sobre el festival que cada septiembre tiene lugar en el desierto de Nevada-.
Considered one of the most eminent and creatively transcendent photographers in Spain, she was introduced to the field of photography within the sphere of the university. Without ever abandoning the classroom, with her camera she has conducted research of the popular, pagan and religious celebrations of Mediterranean Europe, especially Spain. Her book España oculta (Lunwerg, 1989) was fruit of this research, and it received numerous prizes such as “Best Book of the Year Award” at the Arles Photography Festival and the prize awarded by the Eugene Smith Foundation of New York.
